My husband's grandparents were from Newald, WI and at one time had a store, hotel, logging camp, theatre/ballroom. If any one has pictures, artifacts, or memories of them and any of their enterprises, we would love to hear from you. We are having a small family reunion in that area this year and would appreciate your help gathering any of these. The names were Edward and Stella Gerl.

There are many camps that are easily accessible but may require permission to visit as some of the old camp sites are now on private property. There are many sites still known to local residence such as my father. As a child, we would dig through the logging camp dumps and keep the medicine bottles, etc.

I don't know of any books but there is alot of info on the logging camps at both the Wabeno museum and Camp 5 Farm.

I am the granddaughter of John and Flora; their youngest child Marcella is my mother.

I was today looking for the sugar cookie recipe that Flora gave me many years ago. She said it came from her great grandmother who was a French pastry cook for the czar of Russia. The cookies have more butter and cream in them than you would think possible. My daughter Emily, 24, and I are going to try out the recipe for the first time this Christmas.

I have very fond memories of John and Flora. John loved to tell a particular story, about when he was young and ran across two bear cubs by the side of the road. There was a large bounty on bears if you brought in the ears, so this was considered quite a windfall. But the cub's mother showed herself and a chase through the woods ensued. Knowing that bears don't run well downhill, he gave all his might into running uphill ahead of the bear and then turned down to get the advantage. He stepped aside when the bear had lost control going down the hillside. As the bear passed him, John said he jumped on her back, riding her down the hill until he managed to kill her with his knife.

Did they remember to move the centennial time capsule from the old elementary playground when the moved the grade school? Does anyone remember when it was to be opened? Think I was in the 5th (1976) grade when we buried it.

Seeking any information regarding a Dorothy Hiles or Dorothy H. Hiles, born about 1902 in MI or WI who lived in Green Bay in 1920 - she is listed in Wright's directory for that year but does not appear in the census by name or particulars.
